Recent power interruptions in Ghana have sparked concerns among citizens, leading to discussions about the possibility of a return to ‘Dumsor’—a term widely understood to describe persistent and irregular electricity outages. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has stepped forward to address these concerns, asserting that the current situation does not warrant the implementation of a load-shedding timetable, despite the disruptions experienced across the country.

In a recent radio interview with Accra-based Citi FM on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Laila Abubakar, the External Communications Manager of ECG, shed light on the ongoing power outages. She emphasized that while power interruptions have been occurring, they are not solely indicative of load shedding. Abubakar highlighted various factors contributing to these outages, some of which ECG is actively addressing.

Abubakar clarified, “There aren’t any issues with shedding load. The load shed, I think, is what people understand by ‘Dumsor’. But usually, when someone asks me if there is Dumsor, I ask them what do you understand, and what do you think ‘Dumsor’ means. Unfortunately, there wouldn’t be a timetable.”

Simultaneously, ECG issued a caution on Tuesday, March 12, regarding the potential disconnection of certain medical institutions from the national grid due to outstanding bills. A total of 91 health facilities across the country are reported to be indebted to ECG, with a combined outstanding amount of GH¢261 million. Notable hospitals facing potential disconnection include Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, 37 Military Hospital, and Greater Accra Regional Hospital in the Greater Accra Region, among others.

However, ECG expressed its willingness to engage with these institutions to negotiate terms of payment, underscoring its commitment to recovering customer debt and enhancing operational efficiency. According to Ms. Abubakar, this strategic move aligns with ECG’s broader objective of ensuring financial sustainability and improving service delivery.

The developments within ECG reflect the complex landscape of power management in Ghana. While the company addresses challenges such as power outages and debt recovery, it also navigates public perceptions and expectations surrounding ‘Dumsor’ and load shedding. As stakeholders continue to monitor the situation, transparent communication and collaborative efforts between ECG and the public remain essential in finding sustainable solutions to Ghana’s power challenges.
